Going to university in Taiwan. I have a few questions.?

Question by angelmae3995: Going to university in Taiwan. I have a few questions.?
Hello ^.^
This fall I am going to Kaohsiung to attend a university. (I will not say the name of the school, I feel that is not safe so do not ask) I know it is a good school though.
what I would like to know is:
~What kind of plug adapter will I need for my laptop.
~How safe is Kaohsiung at night.
~What areas should I avoid.
~How is the public transportation Network
~What items should I bring
~How hard are university classes in Taiwan
~How much can I earn tutoring English/French/Spanish
~How friendly or racist are the people in Kaohsiung
~What should I visit, Besides Love River and Dream Mall when I am in Kaohsiung?

Yeah it’s quite a few, but I am going to be in Kaohsiung for anywhere from 2-4 years so…..
Thank you guys so far! I would really like some more opinions too so please keep posting.
Thanks, classy! I will get a surge protector!

If you are from N. America no adapter will be needed most likely for your notebook computer. If your laptops plug has 3 prongs you may need a small, cheap adapter to get it to plug into the common 2 prong plug ins here. The voltage is the same.

Kaosiung is safe at night. It has an MRT (subway) system now, so I would imagine transportation there is an improvement on Taichung’s.

From what I hear university is easy in Taiwan.

You can earn 700NT and up per hour tutoring.

People are positively racist towards whites. Somewhat negatively racist towards other Asians but not to their face. Neutral towards blacks and friendly to their face. Everyone is generally friendly.

You and your wife would need to aquire job offers here. Then you can acquire working visas. Then you can bring your kids. Most employers don’t hire married workers and require you to stay in shared accomodation with other workers.

This may be different if either you and your wife have degrees in Engineering, Nursing, or Medicine. Arts/Admin/Law degrees wont help you much out here, unless you want to teach english- which unless you have a passport from the USA, England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or other native first language speaking country will be harder to get offers.

If you already have a job with a company out here it is much easier.

I checked on the forumosa.com website for a suitable Forum for finding this type information or making a related inquiry. I am not sure if your reference to “road bike” is something with a motor or not.

If your “road bike” is motorized, the Cars and Motorcycles Forum would be suitable. See —
http://forumosa.com/taiwan/viewforum.php?f=75

If your “road bike” is not motorized, I believe the Sports Forum would no doubt be best. See —
http://forumosa.com/taiwan/viewforum.php?f=63

These Forums are all in English. You could post an inquiry there stating that you are using a GIANT TCR road bike, and that you want to know where the velodrome location in Taichung is. You could leave your mobile telephone and email address for interested persons to contact you.

Shaklee, Number One Natural Nutrition Company in US, is expanding into Taiwan. What is the best way to find people who would be interested in becoming a distributor in Taiwan?

Best answer:

Answer by allforasia
Start touting the benefits of their products. That is how these companys work. You tell your friends and then they tell their friends, etc. But first, you have to be a believer, and user of their products.
Try hosting some parties where people get to come and check out your new products.
Ask a few buisnesses in your area to try your products for a discounted rate as long as they have your catalog available to customers. I have a friend that owns a coffee shop, and he just got into the whole Melaluca thing. Everytime someone buys a coffee from him, he starts up a conversation about how he has a lot of energy due to his new vitamins.

Oh, and by the way, I don’t know that much about Shaklee. But, I hve been a natural foodie and natural product user for the past 15 years, and I am American, and I am VERY skeptical about your claim of them being the “number one natural nutrition company of the US.” Be careful throwing around such a big claim.

My boyfriend from Taiwan wants me to go to Taiwan. Does an invitation letter needs to be authenticated?

Question by gladys: My boyfriend from Taiwan wants me to go to Taiwan. Does an invitation letter needs to be authenticated?
My boyfriend will send me an invitation letter as a support for my tourist visa application. Does it need to be authenticated? Who in Taiwan must to authenticate the letter? Will a lawyer will do? Thanks.

Answer by PDOCAR
Both my US passport and my Irish passport allow me to visit Taiwan for 30 days.

Taiwan allows the citizens of many countries to visit with a 30 day visa that they give you when you arrive in Taiwan. If not you will need a 60 day tourist visa but that requires
•A valid passport (6 months validity minimum)
•2 recent photos (2″ X 1.5″)
•A completed Taiwan visa application form
•A plane ticket to Taiwan (an e-ticket will do)
•A plane ticket out of Taiwan
•Bank Statement with a minimum of US$ 3000
•Contact address and phone number in Taiwan

I have not heard about an invitation letter but it can’t hurt!

You should double check these requirements as I use an ARC due to the fact that I’m married to one of their citizens.

Question by ginaworld66: I will have a business trip in Taiwan. Could anyone recommend good hotels of Taipei?
I will visit Taipei for business purpose. In addition to work, I want to travel there and experience the local culture. Could anyone recommend me good hotels in Taipei?

Answer by Tim Fishman
I have a lot of experiences visiting Taipei for different purposes. As for business hotel, I recommend South Fullerton Hotel. It is very popular among foreign business visitors. Located in East district of Taipei, it is an ideal choice for shopping. (East district of Taipei is the main shopping area in Taipei) Also, the transportation there is very convenient. You can refer to the link http://taipeifullerton_s.sinotour.com/ (Picture?http://taipeifullerton_s.sinotour.com/images/7E2CE225-4F7C-436D-989D-A644E10600A7.jpg)
If you prefer higher-level hotels, you can choose the hotels belonging to friends group. I like the Friends Group- Yo Xing Regency. The link is as following. http://yous-hotel.sinotour.com/
(picture http://yous-hotel.sinotour.com/images/669F6EAD-8BF5-4780-B095-28B81FA55BD4.jpg)
If you want a hotel with a lower price, I recommend The Royal Biz Taipei Hotel, a business hotel in an ideal location.
You can refer to http://royalbiz.sinotour.com/(picture?http://royalbiz.sinotour.com/images/D3B2F091-06AA-43C7-8B88-92490B57CD25.jpg)
The hotels mentioned above are very close to the most prosperous downtown street, which are good places for visitors to experience local culture.
If you need more information about Taipei travel, you can refer to the Taipei Travel Net website:
http://taipeitravel.net/en/mainpage.asp?pcode=2
or Taipei Tourism: http://taipei.sinotour.com/
and Information for foreigners in Taipei http://iff.immigration.gov.tw/enfront/index.php
Hope those are helpful for you.
