Do people from Taiwan prefer to be classified as Taiwanese or Chinese?

Question by Meii: Do people from Taiwan prefer to be classified as Taiwanese or Chinese?
I’ve always wondered. I have a few friends from Taiwan and they refer themselves as Chinese but I don’t know if a majority of people from Taiwan prefer it. I’m half Filipino and I know that some Filipinos prefer to be referred to as Asian while others prefer Pacific Islander. I’m sure it doesn’t matter too much but I don’t want to end up offending someone one day. Thanks!

The best thing to do is just ask people what they are and they will tell you themselves how they want you to refer to them (you would be able to tell because they would say something like, “I’m Chinese”). Most of the people I’ve met from Taiwan or with Taiwanese origin seemed to prefer being called Taiwanese, though, so it probably differs from person to person.

Do Taiwanese people go to the beach year-round or just in the summer?

Question by Shinchon: Do Taiwanese people go to the beach year-round or just in the summer?
I’m moving to Taiwan this June to teach English, to the southern part (Kaohsiung).

Since Kaohsiung is in the tropics, I’m guessing it’s possible to go swimming all year round, but do people do this? Or do they only go swimming in the summer?
I’m not looking for some rough guess, I’m looking for a knowledgeable answer.

Here in Korea, people seldom go swimming outside the summer months, despite the temperature being perfectly swimmable in Busan and Jeju well into November.
