Question by We Never Left!!: How much is the cost of living in Tainan, TW?
My scholarship grant waived tuition & monthly dorm fees, so that will be excluded to the budget. However, I am not certain about insurances & visa application, or whatever dues that I will be compelled to do so.
Merely, my concerns are food (in & out of the campus), transport, books, laptop/notebook (should I buy one there or better to bring one? which is more expensive?).
Those are my concerns by far.. Thank you.
[I am posting this Q again on behalf of “kadomisu8”. Perhaps he can get a more specific answer with the additional details he has provided this time. Thanks, WNL]
@HowJ – Can you please add some dollar figures in NTD?
Answer by HowJ
Food is cheap in Taiwan. Around college campus and near schools the food will not cost much, and there’s plenty for the students.
Tainan was voted as having the best food/local cuisine in Taiwan.
American or western restaurants may cost more though. Having a meal at McDonald’s will definitely cost more than a pork chop bento box.
Laptop and computers are actually cheaper in the USA the last time I checked. Yea it is strange I know, considering that many of the computer manufacturers and tech companies originated from Taiwan.
If you’re living on campus I am assuming for the most part of your transportation you’ll be on foot, or bicycle. If you live further away a scooter is a popular mode of transportation in Taiwan. Mass transit is plentiful and abundant. There are buses and trains that will take you to other parts of Taiwan anytime of the day.
EDIT: McDonad’s has promotion breakfast meal(sandwich plus coffee for NTD), other meals sandwich+fries+drink go anywhere from NTD to 0NTD
KFC 2 piece chicken meal with fries and a drink is about 0NTD.
A pork chop bento box can go anywhere from cheap to 0 NTD for a fancy one. Near schools food/restaurants are usually more affordable.
7-11, CircleK, FamlyMart are found everywhere. You can always get your tummy filled anytime even in the middle of the night.
