Here in Kaohsiung we have a group on Yahoo called Kaohsiung Living. You can easily post there and get a few replies online.
I agree tealit is not very good…
I think other Taiwanese cities should have groups like this.. Tainan has one, but its not as popular as Kaohsiung.

When is the best time to go Taipei? Is ‘wufenpu’ the most popular place to look for trendy clothing?

Question by Yilin: When is the best time to go Taipei? Is ‘wufenpu’ the most popular place to look for trendy clothing?
I’m planning to go on second week of june or start of july…

Answer by matt_of_asia
Anytime is a good time to visit Taipei. In June and July you just have to be aware that typhoons can put a crimp in your plans and can delay things if they do appear. Expect it to be HOT and probably wet and muggy outdoors. Air-conditioners and shade are your friends.

Just pay attention to weather forecasts. Most typhoons dont appear until later in the summer, late July and August and September is when the majority seem to effect Taiwan.

June is probably a better bet but life doesnt always follow previous patterns and I cannot guarantee great weather!

If you want affordable trendy clothes you can try Wupenfu. If you want more pricy/better quality/ genuine, check near 101 in the malls around there- New York New York, Mitsukoshi, etc. There is a ton of shopping all over Taipei- i will leave that for someone else with more direct Taipei info to help you with!

Try a vegemite e`claire. You won’t pre-detonate, but your exhaust fumes might be considered hazardous.

Where is the best place to watch Tai Chi in Taipei?

Question by William S: Where is the best place to watch Tai Chi in Taipei?
What locations would make for the most interesting experience? What days of the week are best? What time of the day? How long does it last? Is it a good place for pictures or are pictures discouraged? Anything else about the experience would be helpful.

Answer by lestermount
My experiences in Asia is that you will find people doing Tai Chi in the parks and sometimes in other public places in the mornings when it is cool.

They are there a long time, it is easy to get good pictures, they don’t mind.

Besides just doing movements some use swords, or fans, it is real cool.

What is the best way to find an English teaching job in Taiwan, especially in Kaohsiung?

Question by Shinchon: What is the best way to find an English teaching job in Taiwan, especially in Kaohsiung?
I’ve been in Taiwan for about a month now, and have been searching for a job. I’ve called probably close to 30 places and submitted resumes to about half of those.

I’ve had only two interview offers. One of them I had to turn down because the job was much farther away than expected. The other one, I was rejected, BUT the interviewer said that he still thought I had good teaching skills and would have made a good teacher, as well.

I’m fairly well-qualified. I have a CELTA, degree in a linguistics-related field, speak some Chinese, and have 1.5 years of experience teaching in Korea.

Can anyone offer any other suggestions for applying to jobs here?

How saturated is the market? It’s seeming REALLY saturated right now…

I’ve been using Tealit.com to find jobs (my most successful method, seeing as how it yielded two interview offers), and when I ran out of Tealit jobs to apply for, I also scouted out schools and cold-called them and dropped off resumes directly at others (completely unsuccessful, no interview offers).

I’m really feeling like there are almost no English teaching jobs in Kaohsiung right now, not even for reasonably qualified teachers, and the few that exist, there are 30 people applying to each one…

Does anyone have any suggestions? Any job-finding Web sites I don’t know about? Any recruiters I don’t know about?

I’ll take pretty much any job at this point that offers an ARC…

I think you’re right about the market becoming saturated. Too many Westerners want to bail out of the bad economic situation in the USA and elsewhere. You can also try looking online at “ESL99”.

Perhaps some of the other ex-pats here can lend a hand. I’ll try to point them at your question.

Chubu? Jerry? Anybody??? Care to help out?

Thanks, Chubu!

EDIT: ESL99 has a job posted as follows –

It’s hard to determine which one is good because you have to visit them to compare the price range and the styles you like, most photography studios are concentrated in one area so read the link I answered before:

Q&A: What is the best place to visit in Taiwan if you have 1 day to travel?

Question by chububobcat????: What is the best place to visit in Taiwan if you have 1 day to travel?
What is a good weekend vacation spot in Taiwan, or something that is fun to do with little money. Something like a good fishing spot, a beautiful mountain to hike up ( I have been to Alishan ), a nice beach to visit, or just some good roads to cruise along.

If anyone has a good suggestion of a good 1 day or weekend trip or activity in Taiwan please pass it on.
Something to escape the daily routine of life in Taichung. Some place that is quiet or scenic, some place that is interesting or something that is different.
I have been here 4 years so it can be some place that is not normal for tourists, or a place that is best to return to often.
Thanks

Depending on which side of the country you live on, either go to Green Island or to the Penghus.
